The hand is a tool
unique to the human. The presence of four fingers and an opposable
thumb is unique to our species and has created such wonders as the
pyramids of Egypt
and the Mona Lisa, not to mention the computer keyboard and the PDA.
With the advent of these modern wonders, has come a host of overuse
conditions endemic to the human hand.
Perhaps the most
common of these conditions is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS is
characterized by numbness, tingling and pain in the wrist and hand,
especially at night and with use. CTS can be severely disabling. CTS is
frequently seen in association with pregnancy and hypothyroidism and
can be temporary. If symptoms persist, a nerve conduction test is
required as well as treatment with rest and wrist braces. In
recalcitrant cases, surgery (carpal tunnel release) by an orthopedic or
hand surgeon is required. Dr. Hausmann is able to perform outpatient
carpal tunnel release and other hand procedures as the need arises.
